The Paradise

I started watching The Paradise on Netflix a couple days ago and I’ve fallen in love with it in the same head over heels way I fell in love with Downtown Abbey. And the only reason I’m comparing the two is because they’re both BBC shows and they both take place around the same time period – sort of. Downtown’s in the early 20th century, The Paradise takes place in 1875. Around, key word.

The series is about a girl name Denise (honestly, I think they could’ve picked a much nicer name for her) who comes to work for The Paradise after she is turned down by her uncle, who’s draping shop is across the street, because he can’t afford to have her on. Mr. Moray, the owner of The Paradise, takes a liking to Denise due to her constant great ideas and she becomes his new favorite, much to the dismay of her coworker Clara and her superior, Miss Audrey.

It’s a charming series so far, although I will admit some parts of it are a little predictable if you’re anything like me and you like watching period dramas. Not that I’m complaining. Clearly I still enjoy them.

Sadly, upon reading up on the series a little more, I found out BBC cancelled it after a second season to “make room for other shows” and additionally, it’s competitor on iTV, Mr. Selfridge’s, was doing better in viewer ratings. LAAAME.

But I want to watch Mr. Selfridge’s too. GET ON IT NETFLIX.

Salsa Dancing

So last week I went impromptu salsa dancing with a friend I hadn’t hung out with in nearly two years (because she unfriended me on Facebook after I temporarily put her on restricted because we were arguing about the Olympics and she was pissing me off) and it was actually pretty fun.

It was via, a website I’ve been a part of for almost a year, but have never attended any meetups prior to this one. I joined because last year in May when I had a psychic reading, the girl told me I need to put myself out there more and to try Meetup, so I said okay. ANYWAY.

One of the guys who was part of the Meetup group, Rich, ended up being my dance partner for the salsa lesson and the best way I can describe that experience is traumatic.

You know when you see people who have absolutely NO rhythm try to dance and you’re just like, how can one person be so stiff? That’s exactly this awkward Rich guy in a nutshell. Now I’m not claiming to be a professional or that I can dance really well. However, I know how to let loose and shake my hips and follow steps. And that’s what was part of the problem.

He COULD NOT follow steps (or let loose, like, at all) thus making ME look like I was the one who couldn’t dance because he couldn’t lead for shit during the partner lesson. There was a point where the teacher gave us a chance to find new partners if we wanted, and I was all for it, but no one else wanted to switch so I was uncomfortably stuck with this idiot. I kid you all not, I ran away from him the minute the lesson was over.

He tried to add me on Facebook later but I was saved the awkwardness by his friend calling him to the dance floor. Thank God.

I did get to dance with another guy, much older, maybe in this late 40s. His name was Alex and he hailed from quote, “the great Republic of Texas” and I legit thought he was going to say Congo after hearing Republic, even though he was clearly Hispanic. He was very good and spun me a lot which didn’t work out that great because even though he explained which hand movements meant what in terms of direction, I still didn’t catch on quick enough. Oh well.

Fun night overall – even exchanged numbers with a girl from the Meetup group.

But God help me of I go to another salsa thing and Rich is there. I will spin myself around and walk away.

Thor (Spoilers) and Seeing Movies by Myself

So I went to see Thor: The Dark World with my mom and brother for his birthday last night, and before I get on to the main point of today’s post, let me just SPOILER ALERT you all.

There was a part toward the end of the movie where we see Loki die in Thor’s arms and I legit almost started crying. That shit was sad. I was like, NO!!! HOW CAN THEY DO THAT!?! HOW CAN THERE BE MORE THOR MOVIES WITHOUT LOKI!?!

But thankfully, he didn’t actually die. Loki is the god of mischief (and trickery) and he in fact faked his death. Later on, we see a scene where a random Asgardian soldier tells Odin that a body was found, and Odin says “… Loki” and the soldier smiles mischievously.

I personally didn’t notice that part as foreshadowing until my mom, brother, and Krista pointed it out to me. I’m not the kind of person who watches movies waiting for foreshadowing so I can guess what happens next. I like watching them to enjoy them and be surprised. And surprised I was!

At the end of the movie, Odin is sitting on his reconstructed throne, giving his Regency over to Thor. Thor denies it, saying he’ll protect Asgard and the nine realms, but he won’t rule them. And Odin says what a curse he’s been given – one son who wants the throne and power too much, and another who refuses it altogether. Then they say bye and you see Thor walking down the Bifrost, and the camera pans back to Odin, and I forgot what he said, but then HE MOTHERFUCKING TRANSITIONS INTO LOKI AND I SQUEALED AND SLAPPED MY SEAT WITH JOY.

Also, after the main credits there was a portion where Siff (?) and the redheaded soldier give the Aether to some guy who collects relics and weird shit, telling him they decided it was too dangerous to keep two infinity stones so close together and to keep it safe. And when they leave he looks up and says “1 down, 5 to go.” HELLO MOVIE 3 FOR SURE BABY.

ANYWAY, now that I’ve gushed over the perfection that is Tom Hiddleston, a week ago today I went to see Ender’s Game. By myself. I’ll save the gushing over that movie for later (it was also really good). Instead I want to briefly talk about the stigma attached to going to the movies by yourself.

It’s an interesting thing. Why are people so weirded out by it? There is no shame in doing something by yourself that is “traditionally” viewed as a couples or group thing, yet we continue to react to as such. When I told Alyza I was going to the movies by myself, she said it was weird and sent me a snapchat with her face in a reproached expression. It didn’t make me feel any less awkward about embarking on this mini journey, but rather enforced the stigma that it’s weird.

But I discovered that in fact it’s not that weird. Sure I felt awkward at first when the guy in the wheelchair ripped my ticket and directed me to my theater. I felt like other people were judging me for being by myself. But once I was there and enjoying the movie, I felt liberated.

And it’s such a strange feeling, coming to the realization that something as simple as going to the movies by yourself can make you feel so free, but it’s true. I loved it. I didn’t have to impress anyone. I didn’t have to worry if anyone else liked the movie or not. It was just me and my thoughts and it worth the $7.50.

Jacob Hoggard, You Sexual Beast

I’ve spent the last…oh, maybe half hour or so unconsciously trying to figure out why my hair smells different than usual. I JUST remembered that it’s not my hair at all. I put Lush’s Creme Anglaise on my face before I blow dried my hair tonight. I also just spent the past half hour playing people back on Draw Something. I officially have 20 games going on. Here’s the downside to that: either I have a shit ton of people to play back at one time, or I have no one to play back cause they’re all turds. They piled up today.

Speaking of today, it was pretty fantastical. Except for one of my classes was kinda tense. Our teacher tends to get offended when we complain about how we’re confused, even when she asks us to tell her what we think of the class in honest terms. But that aside, it was a good day. Alyza and I finally set up a Youtube account (via much “YOU NEED TO DO THIS ASAP” from HNI) and uploaded not one, but two videos tonight. Here’s the intro video, please enjoy and lol at your leisure. But we hope you lol often.

You can check out the other video at our channel right here. If you have any suggestions for future videos, let us know in the comments or email us at We tried getting podbot on both gmail and youtube but some asshole already took the name. I was sad.

So uh, I mentioned HNI up there a wee bit and I just want to expand on that a little here. There’s not much to expand on really, but and I were watching some video on youtube and he popped out of the abyss and scared the shit out of me. I was not expecting to see him at all today cause I hadn’t seen him earlier and when he came up it was like half an hour before closing time. It was the cherry on top of a great day to see that face, especially when I told him PodBot is official.

Also, I just want all of you to know that I’m listening to my Hedley station on Pandora right now and they’re actually playing Hedley and it just reminds me of the Hedley concert Alyza and I went to in 2010. And I really wish Jacob Hoggard could sing me to sleep every night. I would tap that ass to the moon and back. He is so damn sexy. Raging lady boner for that man.

Cheerio, Bitches!

I don’t think I’ll have time to update this thoroughly enough tonight, but I MUST state that today has been absolutely awesome and ridiculous and it included Panda Express!

At the end of the day, me and did something TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY AWESOME that I unfortunately just realized I can’t talk about until tomorrow, so you’ll all have to wait until them to find out about that. But let me just say that I ended up laughing SO HARD – literally harder than I’ve ever laughed in my life – for 5 minutes. I fell on the floor, I cried. It was absolutely uncontrollable. And no one in the library was phased WHATSOEVER by this. I love this job.

Anyway, it’s end of term celebration time! And I just boozed it up. Cheerio bitches!

Sushi and Drinks and Halloween, Oh My!

Amount of things I did today that contributed to my homework assignments: 0
Amount of things I did today that were pure fun: quite a few. :D
Including grocery shopping with my dad [which doesn’t sound like fun, but it was. I got sushi and drinks, yummo!] and making my mom get out of the house for about 10 minutes to take pictures of me jumping because I felt the need to capture my hair in motion. There’s a lot where she captured me genuinely laughing and while I think they’re not that attractive, they are attractive in the sense of “hey look, a genuine emotion.” You know?

This is my favorite in terms of motion of the hair.

I can’t wait for this term to be over. Only one more week and then a week full of freedom to do anything I want and wake up whenever I want with no alarm!! But it’s all bittersweet. All the cool kids are graduating. Which really is quite depressing. This will be the third time I’ll have gotten close with coworkers only to have to say goodbye so soon. I want to say that it’s not like we’ll never see each other again, but it’s probably somewhat true. I can look back on any friendship from high school and early college and say that those who graduated have not kept in touch. But it works both ways. Life gets in the way. It’s how these things go. Nothing you or I can do but move forward. Right? Right.

Nostalgia aside, tomorrow is Halloween! And I’m kind of excited even though I’m pretty sure I’m going to be a loner as usual, not getting drunk via keg-stands and whoring myself out with friends. I’ll be dressing up as a cat I think. Although I was just about to go Google panda makeup and see how to do it in case I do a last minute change. I watched Heidi Klum’s vlog thingy on AOL earlier today about her costumes. She has incredibly strange taste in Halloween costumes, but I kinda like it in that weird way. So I checked back to AOL a few minutes ago and saw this article where I found this fantastic picture of Kim Kardashian. I really don’t like Kim Kardashian for many reasons, but I am in love with this take on Ivy. Makes me wish I was Ivy for Halloween!
